Dr
Jean Grundy Fanelli was born and grew up in Lincoln, England,
the setting for The War Comes to Witham Street, and lived
there until her late teens. At first a librarian before
opting for her great passion, music; she gained music diplomas,
a degree, and doctorate. A lecturer on various foreign university
programmes in Italy and author of many scholarly articles
and five books, her latest non/fiction work is a general
guide to opera, Opera for Everyone.
She
has lived in Italy since the mid-Sixties. After marriage
to an Italian lawyer she lived in Rome for eight years before
moving to Florence where she settled in the country in an
isolated farmhouse with a magnificent view of what the Italians
call 'Chiantishire'. After almost fifteen years she admitted
to herself that Tuscan country life was not really as glamorous
as all those books about happy people crushing their own
grapes and olives make it, so she opted for a garden flat
right in the centre of town. She has two grown-up children
and a number of animals, the latter still at home.
She
enjoys gardening, although stubbornly continues planting
English border flowers that are unable to take the summer
drought. She also enjoys painting and is an avid reader.
At
the present time, she is working on a sequel to The War
Comes to Witham Street, and also on a history of comic opera.
